Monthly mortgage repayments up 38% to $1,800 per month since 2006: ABS census 2011
Median monthly mortgage payments increased by $500 between 2006 and 2011, representing a 38% increase over this time frame, according to the 2011 census.
This is lower than the 50% increase in weekly rental payments recorded between the two censuses.
The median monthly mortgage repayment in Australia was $1,800 in the 2011 census, compared with $1,300 in the 2006 census.
For 9.9% of households, their mortgage repayment was more than 30% of their income – the common definition of mortgage stress – up from 8.4% in the 2006 census.
