The NSW Government’s planning system acceleration program has fast-tracked approval on a $64 million construction project in Redfern.

Located in the heart of the suburb, the new 18-storey building will be home to more than 400 students and create 240 construction jobs, said Minister for planning and public spaces Rob Stokes.

The building will include Aboriginal artwork and creative open public spaces.

“This is another example of a major shovel ready project being given fast-tracked approval to keep the NSW economy ticking throughout the pandemic,” Stokes said.

The Redfern development is one of 11 projects in the sixth tranche of the NSW Government’s acceleration program.

To date, the program has created more than 50,000 direct job opportunities.

As the NSW Government steers to make affordable student accommodation a priority, many projects are popping up in the Redfern area.

In June, Singapore-based developer Wee Hur Holdings announced plans to create its second student accommodation facility in Redfern.
