The London-bound former foreign minister Alexander Downer and wife, Nicky have listed Brampton House, their Adelaide Hills family home for 17 May auction.

He is set to become Australia's high commissioner to Britain, a job his father did in the 1960s.

Brampton House is named after the Derbyshire town where Mrs Downer was born.

Toop & Toop agent Arabella Cooper is expecting $1.2 million plus for the five-bedroom, two-bathroom home set on four hectares where six cross bred Dorper sheep kept the grass down.

The one-storey house, 20 minutes up the South Eastern Freeway from Adelaide, has a pool, tennis court and spring-fed dam.

There are views north-east over the Onkaparinga Valley.

The Downer's found the land at Mount George in 1988 while living in Macclesfield.

They are empty nesters as their four children no longer live at home.
