The 1852 colonial homestead, Westbank at Sydney's Emy Plains has been listed for sale with offers sought above $1.78 million.

The property at 2-6 Nepean Street is marketed as "arguably one of Sydney's premier historical properties".

Sandstone walls, exposed beams, pressed metal ceilings and stained glass inlays accompany its 12-foot ceilings.

The purpose-built ground floor rooms can be used for commercial purposes.

Set on 2,268 square metres close to the Nepean River, Westbank has been listed by Craig Caughlan and Paul Dukes at Dukes Estate Agents.

The former farm cottage was originally on a larger parcel of land with orchard which extended to the Nepean River.

In recent years the property has been developed with additions at the rear.

It has been listed by the gynaecologist Dr Roger McMaster-Fay, and his wife Gwen who paid $700,000 in the mid-1990s.

It was once the home of silent film actor Will Carter.
