The two bedroom Old Mechanics Institute built in 1857 in South Melbourne, has been sold by the Black family.

It is a striking bluestone hall with interior dimensions of 340 square metres of contemporary space.

It last sold in 2012 at around $2 million and first sold after its fit-out in 2007 by property developer Karl Kutner at $1,725,000.

Abercrombie's Sam Goddard was taking offers on 272a Dorcas Street until 15 September, then listed it for mid-October auction, but didn't secure the sale until late October.

No sale price has been revealed.
