Who do you trust to get your property information from? Michael Matusik

When 650-odd property types were asked “If you were considering a new property purchase, what three sources of property information would you go to first?” 

What do you think they said?

  • Google                                               39%

  • Agent website                                31%

  • Property signage                          25%

  • Printed material                           23%

  • Friend or colleague                     20%

Property purchasing used to be largely a private affair.  Many would have asked their parents, friends or relatives for their opinion.  This might have been the only advice they got or needed to make a buying decision.  This was the norm not that long ago.  

Today it seems that buyers need much more certainty.  Seeking the views of others – even from those we really don’t know, but trust – seems to be the norm.  

Several ‘trusted’ blog sites were mentioned in our survey.  Our Matusik Property Insights site were among them.  Thank you.  And we would have scored more highly in the rankings if we allowed comments and replies on the blog.  It seems that forums are more trusted than not. I have a different view.  So let’s say I agree to disagree.  

Moreover, our survey shows, to me, that property promotion these days needs to be much more ‘communal’ rather than direct & monopolistic.  The monologue tone of too many property marketing campaigns is obviously not working as well as the spin doctors would have us (or their clients) believe.  

Trusted third party professional support is needed.

As Bob Dylan croaks – “I got eight carburettors, boys I’m using ’em all” – so too should vendors & developers when it comes to promoting property.  A multi-faceted marketing campaign is needed & one that includes – no, it need to be front & centre – social media.  

There are many barriers delaying property’s move to a more social, communal promotional platform.  The biggest is the current way property sales are renumerated.  

How does one determine the true source of a lead in such a melting pot?  How can a property buyer continue to be ‘owned’ by a marketing group or agency?  

She’s my client!  I have known them for years!  If I don’t get the full wack I’m taking my client elsewhere!  My database is bigger than theirs, so I am the best agent for the job.  

If this sounds all too familiar, then maybe it is time to think about change.  

My father told me years ago that you will go broke trying to change the market.  It is best to find out what the market wants and how it behaves and adjust accordingly.
