Mount Waverley is a suburb of Eastern Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located 16 km east of Melbourne's Central Business District, in the local government area of the City of Monash. At the 2016 Census, Mount Waverley had a population of 34,992.
The area now known as Mount Waverley was originally inhabited by the Woiwurrung and Bunurong Indigenous Australian clans. The first European settlers in the area were James and William Wedge-Woodward who arrived in 1837 and named the area after their birthplace in England - Mount Waverley in Surrey.
The Woodward family operated a timber mill from 1865 to 1892 which supplied sawn timber to Melbourne's rapidly growing construction industry. In 1889, John Gardiner purchased 270 acres (110 ha) from the Woodward family and subdivided it into small farm blocks which he sold off over the next decade. The Gardiner family also ran a dairy on what is now Warrigal Road near Scotchmans Creek.
Mount Waverley has very easy and good access to central Melbourne through its local railway station on the Glen Waverley line. And in the 2030s, Glen Waverley will have a stop on the upcoming Suburban Rail Loop.
