Kew is an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne, located 3 km east of the CBD. Originally part of Richmond, Kew began to be developed as a separate suburb in the mid-19th century. It is bordered by Hawthorn, Camberwell and Canterbury.
Kew has a mix of residential and commercial areas. The main shopping strip is along High Street, between Cotham Road and Burke Road.
The commercial area also includes the Kew Junction shopping centre, on the corner of Glenferrie and Barkers roads. There are several schools in Kew, including Xavier College (boys), Carey Baptist Grammar School (co-educational) and Genazzano FCJ College (girls).
The Yarra River forms the southern boundary of Kew. On its banks are several parks, including Studley Park Boathouse and Botanic Gardens Victoria's Herbarium. The river also features a number of walking and cycling paths.
