Balwyn North is a suburb of eastern Melbourne, Australia. It is located 13 kilometres north-east from Melbourne's Central Business District and is within the local government areas of the City of Whitehorse and City of Boroondara.
Balwyn North recorded a population of 9,521 at the 2016 Census.
The area was first settled in 1837 by William Shingler who named his property "Welshvale". The name was later applied to the railway station which opened on 12 December 1889.
The suburb was created in 1949 when it was split off from Balwyn. Most of the original housing stock consisted of modest single-storey dwellings on large blocks, many of which have since been replaced by higher-density developments.
